Chazz 2 returns -- Bi-aurals Rejoice!

Postby brian » Fri Oct 31, 2008 9:22 am

e been asked many times: what happened to Chazz and when will it return?
return is imminent.

the new Chazz 2:

OTL -- the cost of output transformers and the costs incurred through shipping have become a challenge due to costs escalating out of site this past year. The new Chazz 2 will be OTL -- but not only that; many regard the Achilles heel of the OTL to be the electrolytic coupling capacitors. Due to our involvement in manufacturing capacitors we are able to implement large high-quality Obbligato film capacitors in the coupling position. What a difference that makes to transparency and soundstage detail and focus! See what's in your head.

the circuit uses all tubes all the time. The gain stage is a 2 x 12AU7, the driving stage is 6AS7 family. Output stage is loaded with a tube current source, output is from from the anode and able to push headphones from 32 ohms up to 600 ohms impedance!

the chassis uses our new Projekt Box about which more is said in the next blog entry.

the for-sale model will have two inputs controlled by a toggle switch, switchable 0/3/6db local feedback and two outputs -- one each from the anode and cathode. Additionally both can be used for balanced-mode.

did I mention the price? $479USD including balanced-mode cable. Only available assembled at this time.

welcome back to an old friend.

OK light at the end of the tunnel. Should be next week. I was at the factory and they are all there getting the finishing touches.
We ended up using 6AS7 and 2 x 12AU7 with the other tricks mentioned.
Will have an announcement soon.

Will it be offered as a kit as well?
What happened to 'expect well under $400'?

Kit: next run. Expect a few months. For now this is what we have.
what happened to the projected $400 selling price: We switched to the 6AS7 which added a choke and also added some tricks -- the switchable feedback and dual output from anode or cathode. Sorry but it pushed the cost up a bit.

Chazz II + Balanced = Home Run!

Postby brian » Wed Apr 29, 2009 9:01 am

Mama jama!
There is something to this balanced mode headphone thing.
Yesterday I got the first sample of the balanced-mode cables for the Chazz II. More space, detail, air, dynamics and less grain.

The cable is complete with connectors to plug into the Sennheiser type. The difference is dual 1/4" phono plugs on the receiving end. Yes true balance! The hot is taken from the anode, the cold from the cathode -- no ground connection. Only the cable shield is connected to the plug body but signal does not see a ground.

The cable itself is teflon served copper and will sell for $45USD complete with plugs and Senn. compatible connectors.

So... we will include a cable free with Chazz II -- for the time being.

Also just testing a cable that will allow using the Chazz II as a linestage to drive an amplifier. 1/4" phono on the end that plugs into the Chazz II and RCA plugs on the end that connects into the amp. Also made from same teflon coax. So you can have the Chazz II do all its tricks through the main system as well. What tricks are those? Have you forgotten? Switchable 0/-3db/-6db local feedback, and choice of cathode output or anode output.

More DIY done right!
